Profile and Career Info
The son of an autorickshaw driver, Mohammad Siraj started playing cricket with a tennis ball and held a leather ball for the first time in 2015 at the age of 19.
The fast bowler was included in the Hyderabad state team in 2015-16 after playing in the U-23 tournament. However, he could only play one game in his debut season. In 2016, he was a net bowler for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), where assistant coach Bharat Arjun spotted his potential and helped him work on his raw pace.
In 2016-17, Arjun was appointed as the coach of Hyderabad and Siraj got another chance to shine under the guidance of his coach, whom he had already met at the RCB camp.
The fast bowler took 41 wickets in 9 matches and was the third highest wicket-taker in the tournament this season. He credited coach Bharat Arjun for his success, calling him an ‘angel’.
After success in the domestic circuit, the young bowler bagged an IPL contract worth INR 2.6 crore by Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2017 season. He played his first game against Delhi Capitals and ended the season with 10 wickets in six outings.
The Mohammed Siraj right-arm medium fast bowler made his T20I debut against New Zealand in 2017.
Siraj became the highest wicket-taker (23 wickets) in the 2017–18 Vijay Hazare Trophy and was then bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for INR 2.20 crore in the 2018 auction. He played 11 games for RCB in the 2018 season and took 11 wickets.
In 2019, the Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj made his ODI debut against Australia . Siraj had a mediocre tournament during the 2019 season where he could only take 7 wickets in his 10 outings and gave away runs at an economy of around 10.
In the IPL 2020 season, Siraj took 11 wickets in 9 matches at a strike rate of 14.81.
After a phenomenal IPL, the fast bowler was named for the Test series against Australia in what turned out to be a series to remember for him. Before the start of the tour, he lost his father but decided to stay with the team to fulfill his father’s dream of seeing Siraj play Test cricket. The pacer made his Test debut for injury-hit India against Australia at the MCG.
Siraj picked up his first wicket at the Gabba and was instrumental in India’s second consecutive series win. After this series, they played two more Tests against touring England.
In February 2021, Mohammad Siraj was retained by RCB for the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League. In the last couple of months, the pacer has made some tremendous progress and this will be part of captain Virat Kohli’s plan to win his first IPL trophy and then contribute to the final of the World Test Championship.
